Edgar Allan Poe funeral Baltimore, Oct 10 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Though he died in 1849, Edgar Allan Poe will get his funeral over the weekend. He was found delirious, lonely, suffering from various illnesses and barely able to comprehend his surroundings outside a Traven more than a century ago. He was taken to the Baltimore hospital where he died after 4 days. He was buried in haste after his death, as he had died a pauper.

“When they dug up Poe’s body in 1875 to move it, it was mostly skeletal remains,” Jerome said. “I’ve seen remains of people who’ve been in the ground since that time period, and there’s hardly anything left.”

In honor of his 200th birthday over the weekend, his numerous fans have planned an elaborate funeral for him. They will pay their last respects and also give him an official funeral. Thousands of his fans are expected to attend this historic occasion.

“We are following the proper etiquette for funerals. We want to make it as realistic as possible,” said Jeff Jerome, curator of the Poe House and Museum.

The UK Telegraph reports on the funeral this weekend, “At 11.30am on Sunday, a life-size recreation of his body will be carried in a horse-drawn carriage from his Baltimore home in Amity Street, to the Westminster Burying Ground where not one, but two full-length ceremonies will be held in front of up to 700 admirers.

“From Alfred Hitchcock to Bart Simpson to The Beatles — who placed Poe center stage on the cover of their Sgt. Pepper album — the legendary writer, poet and literary critic has captured the public imagination as few, if any, have ever done.” said U.S. Postal Service Board of Governors member Katherine C. Tobin.

    Dear Thaindian.com:

This is such a marvelous idea. At the moment, I am in Santa Monica, Ca unable to make it for the funeral in honor of a great writer. I had fallen in love with Poe as a young high school girl, and he has been my inspiration toward many of my artistic activities. So very sorry cannot be there for the honorary burial.

    Sincerely,

    Liliana Prina
