Ecuador hit by 6.9 magnitude earthquake on the Richter Scale

Quito, Aug 12 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Ecuador has been hit with a strong earthquake measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale in an area around the middle part of the country. The earthquake struck the region on Thursday according to reports by the US Geological Survey and the country’s media.

Even though the tremor was very strong, it occurred deep under the earth, which means that its effect will not be as damaging as it would have been, if it had occurred on the surface of the earth.

The disaster occurred at 1154 GMT and its center was 87 miles to the east of Ambato. It was experienced by residents living in the country’s capital Quito as well as the inhabitants of the northern parts of the country too.

There have been no reports about any damage to the oil producing country’s oil infrastructure. The quake’s magnitude was estimated at 6.7 at first, but later it was increased to 7.2 and finally pegged at 6.9 on the Richter scale.

There have been no tsunami warnings from the US Tsunami Warning Center. And despite the earthquake fortunately there haven’t been any reports of extensive damage as a result of the earthquake.
