EC to set up committtee to investigate PPPJuly 9th, 2008 - 2:51 pm ICT by Amrit Rashmisrisethi
Election Commission (EC) member Sumeth Upanisakorn (สุเมธ อุปนิสากร) says the EC will set up a panel to see whether the People Power Party executives could be involved in People Power deputy leader and former house speaker Yongyuth Tiyapairat’s election fraud case, once the EC receives the official document from the Constitution Court. Mr. Yongyuth has been found guilty of election fraud and has been barred from politics for five years by the Constitution Court.
Mr. Sumeth says the People Power Party would not be dissolved, if its executives were unaware or uninvolved with Mr. Yongyuth’s vote-buying during the general election last year, as stated in Act 98 of the 2007 Constitution.
Mr. Sumeth says the EC will hold a by-election in Chiang Rai’s constituency 3 within the next 45 days after Ms. La-ong Tiyapairat, the younger sister of Mr. Yongyuth, has been yellow carded by the commission.
