July 28, 2010 (Pen Men at Work): The Eastern Shore of Virginia is geared up to commemorate the 85th ‘Chincoteague pony swim’ on July 28. Numberless guests are likely to observe this twelve-monthly exhibition on July 28. This exhibition was bequeathed famousness by the novel, ‘Misty of Chincoteague.’ This novel was inscribed by Marguerite Henry in 1947. The Chincoteague pony happens to be a resilient strain of horses that have grown on the Assateague Island, which is off the Atlantic coast of Maryland and Virginia.
The Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Department (CVFD) organizes the pony swim and it includes a Wild Pony Swim and a Pony Auction. For the former, Salt Water Cowboys (SWC) gather together undomesticated Chincoteague Ponies from the Assateague Island. Then, these undomesticated ponies are propelled across the Assateague Channel to the Veteran’s Memorial Park on Chincoteague Island. The ponies bathe across the channel when the water possesses negligible tidal progress. Once these ponies touch down at Chincoteague Island, the SWCs direct the ponies to pens on the Chincoteague Carnival Grounds. On these turfs, some of the ponies are vended. Therefore, in short, what is the Chincoteague pony swim all about? Every year, ponies are vended in order to gather cash for the CVFD. This Department is culpable for the nurture of the herd.
The Coast Guard will again lend a hand to local firefighters in order to construct a safety precinct for the pony swim. The Coast Guard has counseled the boaters to accord a sufficient amount of room for the ponies.
Inevitably, some ponies will not be vended. Some will instead be bestowed back to the CVFD. These ponies will have the privilege of wandering without restraint on the national wildlife refuge in Assateague.
This time-honored event in its present appearance has occurred since 1925. Its heredity, however, transports it back to the 17th century.
