Dutch soldier dies in Afghanistan (update)
September 8th, 2009 - 1:46 am ICT by BNO NewsAMSTERDAM (BNO NEWS) — A Dutch soldier died in southern Afghanistan on Monday, the second fatality from the country in as many days, officials said.
The 44-year-old Sergeant Major died after an improvised explosive device (IED) exploded near the convoy they were on, the country’s ministry of defense said during a press conference. Three other soldiers were injured in the attack.
A military source earlier confirmed to BNO News that at least one Dutch soldier died in southern Afghanistan.
On Sunday, Cpl. Kevin van der Rijdt, a member of a special forces unit, died during a firefight with insurgents near Deh Rawood in southern Afghanistan.
