Drunk driver leaves 4 dead in St Petersburg, Florida
August 1st, 2010 - 9:16 pm ICT by BNO NewsST PETERSBURG, FLORIDA (BNO NEWS) — A 20-year-old drunk driver has been charged with multiple counts of manslaughter after colliding with another vehicle on early Sunday, killing four people.
The accident happened around 00.46 a.m. EDT on 22nd Avenue North and M.L. King Street North in St Petersburg when a vehicle, driven by 20-year-old Demetrius D. Jordan, collided with another.
Witnesses told police that Jordan, who was traveling southbound on M.L. King Street North in a 2001 Chevrolet Impala, was traveling at a high rate of speed and disregarded the red traffic signal at 22nd Avenue North. The Impala then collided with a 2010 Ford Fusion, which was westbound on 22nd Avenue North.
The Fusion, which was being driven by 51-year-old Elroy McConnell of Orlando, then traveled in a southwest direction and collided with a large support beam for a sign. McConnell, as well as his three sons, were pronounced dead at the scene.
McConnell’s sons were identified by the St Petersburg Police Department as 19-year-old Kelly D. McConnell, 24-year-old Nathan S. McConnell, and 28-year-old Elroy McConnell III.
Jordan and his passenger, 20-year-old Mario D. Robinson, were transported to Bayfront Hospital with serious injuries. Jordan was charged with four counts of DUI Manslaughter and one count of DUI Serious Bodily Injury.
