Luis Alberto Hessmar Vargaswas arrested after apparently falling asleep behind the wheel of his Chevrolet D-Max truck at approximately 6:10 a.m. local time, running over a group of people in the Bastion Popular neighborhood waiting at a bus stop that connects several routes within Guayaquil and to other areas outside the city’s limits.
Eight people died at the scene, while seven more died in the following hours. Media outlets listed a pregnant woman among the victims.
After the accident, angry locals tried to lynch Hessmar Vargas, but local authorities arrived quickly, preventing the group from doing so. However, residents flipped over the truck and the officers’ vehicle, setting both vehicles on fire.
On Monday, a group of angry local residents blocked the road where the accident happened. After several attempts, which were initially thwarted by law enforcement officials, protesters were able to block the lanes with burning tires.
