Dozens die in South African bus crash
May 5th, 2010 - 3:39 pm ICT by BNO NewsCAPE TOWN (BNO NEWS) — At least 24 people were killed and more than a dozen have been seriously injured after a bus crash in the Western Cape province of South Africa, according to local media.
The accident happened shortly before 6 a.m. local time on the N1 highway between De Doorns and Touwsrivier in the southwestern province of Western Cape. According to the South African Press Association (SAPA), 24 people were killed and 11 more were seriously injured.
SAPA cited a spokesman for the Western Cape Department of Community Safety, Xenophone Wentzel, as saying that the bus belonged to a private company in the Eastern Cape and was on its way to Cape Town.
“We have just discovered in the system that it was not supposed to be operating as it had been suspended by the Eastern Cape traffic department because it was unroadworthy,” Wentzel was cited by SAPA as saying.
Wentzel said the accident occurred when the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn.
