Donald Trump offers to buy out New York City Park51 mosque
September 10th, 2010 - 4:39 am ICT by BNO News ( Leave a comment )NEW YORK CITY (BNO NEWS) – Donald Trump on Thursday offered to buy out the main investor involved in the controversial mosque project near Ground Zero in Lower Manhattan, saying if the situation were unattended, it is only destined to get worse.
The letter was addressed to Hisham Elzanaty, an Egyptian-born businessman, who has provided a majority of the financial funding as to gain control over the two buildings were the center would be built. Previously, he has indicated that while he supports the idea of a mosque there, he would need to turn a profit and would consider a buyout of the property.
Elzanaty indicated that his real estate partnership, which paid some $4.8 million for half the site last year, has already received offers of triple that in order to sell the property. Trump offered 25 percent on top of what Elzanaty paid for the property.
Donald Trump, an American real-estate developer and business icon, made the offer to Elzanaty as “a resident of New York and citizen of the United States,” but said that he didn’t do so because the location was “a spectacular one” but rather because he wanted to remedy a situation he defined as “serious, inflammatory, and highly divisive”.
He indicated that as part of the offer, it would be agreed that if they were to build a mosque, it would be at least five blocks further from the World Trade center site. The offer was entirely in cash with an immediate closing, which is subject to the finalization and signing of the terms accepted by both parties.
Trump concluded, saying “Hopefully, something good can happen!” There hasn’t been any indication that this deal will go through. The controversial Florida pastor, Terry Jones of Dove World Outreach Center who threatened to burn a number of Qur’ans, said that he had reached an agreement with the project leader, Feisal Abdul Rauf, to move the mosque away from Ground Zero. This is something that Rauf has denied, according to NBC News, causing further controversy.
