schn1Wichita, Kansas, June 25, (THAINDIAN NEWS) A doctor and his wife in Kansas have been convicted for conspiracy after over-prescribing painkillers that led to 68 fatal overdoses. Stephen Schneider and his wife Linda Schneider were taken into custody right after the court ruling that convicted the man of 19 of the 34 counts and his wife on 32 counts.

The charges against the couple include conspiracy, illegal prescription of controlled substances, health care fraud and money laundering. The prosecutors called the clinic which the couple ran, a kind of pill-mill for the drug addicts. The couple argued that they had always given legitimate drugs but admitted that they may have been cheated by some of their patients. Lawyers say that the couple could be facing up to 20 years after were found guilty of the charges. The defense lawyer said that the couple were completely shocked by the verdict while adding that the jurors have been influenced by a pre-trial publicity by the US Attorney’s office. He also added that the couple was innocent and the verdict has been a failure of the justice system for the ordinary citizens.

The court was an emotional scene for the two adopted daughters of the Schneiders who realized that their parents could be facing a long sentence. The two month trial ended after a week of jury deliberations that saw the couple being convicted on multiple counts. Tanya Treadway, the US attorney who fought the case was unavailable for comment. A widower, whose wife passed away of overdose at 45, appreciated the outcome of the case and said that justice has finally been served.
