Orange County, July 12, (THAINDIAN NEWS) A sheriff from Orange County who had been accused of tampering witnesses in court and was also convicted for the same, was one of the 400 employees from the county to receive more than $100,000 as pension after retirement. It has been reported that the retirement benefits given to the employees of Orange County has seen a major cut over the past couple of years, and Michael Carona, a disgraced sheriff received a total amount of $215,000 as pension money.
According to documents collected from the Orange County Employees Retirement System, the county faces a deficit of $3.7 billion in retirement benefits to be distributed to former employees. In spite of this, Michael Carona and Robert Citron, also a disgraced tax collector in the Orange County, have been paid more than what the rest of the employees have received. Robert Citron has been accused of making investments which led Orange County to the verge of bankruptcy in the year 1994. Robert Citron made all these investments following the advice of astrologers and psychics in Orange County.
While Robert Citron does not face any jail sentence, Michael Carona was sentenced to prison for a period of more than five years. The sheriff’s case is still pending in the Orange County courts and he is currently free on bail.
The documents which reveal the details of the Orange County retirement plans, have led to a debate among many as to the commitment of the government officials to ensure the safety of the public workers in the county.
