nigerDetroit, Jan 11, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The 23 year old Nigerian, who is accused of attempting to blow up a Detroit bound plane on Christmas Day appeared in a Detroit court last Friday, which resulted in the judge filing a not guilty plea on behalf of the suspected terrorist.

Terror suspect Umar Farouk Abdlmutallab was brought to the U.S. court in leg irons, where he had to answer questions from judge Bernard Friedman. Later, his court appointed attorney Miriam Siefer entered the plea of not guilty to as many as six charges- which included attempted murder as well as trying to use weapon of mass destruction on the U.S. flight. Following a brief question-answer session with the judge, the British student was quickly escorted out of the court although a huge media frenzy was observed outside the courtroom.

Meanwhile, the security in the courtroom was kept extremely tight as this was the first court appearance of the terror suspect since his failed attempt to blow up the U.S. plane. Metal barricades were raised outside the courtroom and sniffer dogs were also present to avoid any untoward incident.

Umar Farouk Abdlmutallab tried to blow up a Northwest Airlines flight by detonating some explosive material just as the plane was about to land in the Detroit airport. However, the terrorist attempt was foiled due to the swift action taken by the passengers aboard the plane, who were successful in subduing the terrorist. If the suspect turned out to be successful in carrying out his vicious plan then it could have jeopardized the lives of 290 passengers who were in the plane when the incident took place.
