Despite tar balls, Florida beaches remain open to the public
July 11th, 2010 - 8:08 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattFlorida, July 11 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Despite several health concerns, most of the beaches at Florida remain open. This is indeed surprising, as tar balls have been found at the beaches.
Concerns over the health implications of swimming in the Gulf have been heightened, after over 400 people reported feeling sick after swimming in the oil stained Gulf of Mexico.
Beach officials say the option to swim or not should be given to the individual. It however warned that any evidence of oil in the sea means the person should not enter the sea. But most beach goers say the signs are too easy to miss.
The signs include seeing any oil product on the beach, tar balls, oil mousse and feeling oil on their skins, if they enter the sea.
Vacations at the beaches along the Gulf Coast have been threatened since the BP oilrig disaster in April 20. A huge quantity of crude oil has seeped into the sea, since the accident and the impact of the oil spill has made the accident the worse environmental disaster in the United States history.
So far, all attempts by BP and the US authorities have failed to contain the leaking oil. BP has reportedly spent $3 billion so far in the cleanup exercise. However there seems to be hope in sight as the federal government in the United States declared that underwater robots might fix a cap that will stop the leak this week.
