Desiree Phillips dies after taking extra paracetamol
December 15th, 2011 - 8:53 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattLondon, Dec 15 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A woman has died after taking more paracetamol than the prescribed dose to relieve her pain. Desiree Phillips had undergone a minor surgery and used the pain-killer to relieve the pains that she felt.
Desiree was rushed back to the hospital for having excruciating pain just nine days after the surgery. When doctors checked on her, they realized that she has suffered irreversible liver damage. She died as a result of the complications associated with liver failure.
The incident has got doctors highlighting the dangers that paracetamol overdose over a period is dangerous. Scientists say small overdose of the drug over a period of time is considered more dangerous than having a single, massive overdose.
Des, the father of Desiree, explained that his daughter “seemed fine to us, then out of the blue her boyfriend found her stretched out on the sofa and he rang an ambulance. The whole thing came as a terrible shock. When we heard she was in hospital we never expected that she might die.”
He admitted that Desiree took “few extra” tablets more than the recommended dose of eight tablets daily. He said they never knew the dangers of it until it claimed the life of Desiree. He has warned against the practice.
A research on the subject was carried out last month in London and it was found that those who took few doses more than the recommended dose were three times more likely to die from liver injuries compared to those who take single, massive dose.
