New York, Nov 25 (THAINDIAN NEWS) In a statement that is going to raise a big debate, Debbie Schlussel has recently called for a ban on single mothers in the military because they are “useless soldierettes”. And she also said that their absence is harmful to their children. Schlussel clarified that deploying single moms “exacts more costs and bureaucratic BS than it’s worth.”

She was specifically referring to the case of Spc. Alexis Hutchinson, the Oakland, Calif., Army cook. She was a single mom and as she refused to go for active service so she was arrested. Hutchinson’s attorney said officers advised the single mom to place her 10-month-old son in foster care while she was deployed. The Army has not confirmed that statement.

Even when childcare plans are firm, child psychologist Dr. Karen Streeter said the long separation could be traumatic for children.

“It’s really almost like a grieving process because time is different for a child than an adult. The children may regress a little bit. They might be clingier. They may even be irritable and sad like an adult would be. And they may go through a depression,” said Streeter.

Streeter said that parents could make the separation easier by leaving a trove of letters or notes so that their children can open a new note from their parent each week. Parents can also arrange for their children to start a new hobby so the adventure will keep their young minds busy while time passes. For the toddlers, said Streeter, it is important that they have tangible reminders of the absent parent, like photos and video clips.
