CIUDAD JUAREZ (BNO NEWS) — At least 16 people were killed and 12 were injured as hitmen stormed three houses while teenagers were partying in Ciudad Juarez on Sunday, Mayor Jose Reyes Ferriz told local media on Monday.

Earlier in the day, Ferriz told national radio that 18 people were killed, but he corrected the information in press conference on Monday afternoon and said ten of the victims were confirmed dead at the scene while six others died later at a local hospital.

Hitmen arrived in several cars, blocked the streets and stormed the high school student party, officials said Sunday afternoon.

The gunmen started shooting from outside the house and then went room by room killing the students, and pursued others as they tried to escape by jumping over a fence.

As the gunmen ordered the women to exit the area, one of the victim’s girlfriend refused to abandon him and was shot alongside the others. Another teenager survived as he hid and stayed silent in a closet during the attack.

At least 111 AK-47 bullet casings were found at scene, a police source told CNN.

When the police and the Army arrived at the scene, they were confronted by angry residents. It was not clear if any of the students were linked to a drug cartel, but at least one of them witnessed a multiple homicide days ago, according to El Diario newspaper.

State officials offered a reward of 1 million pesos, about $800,000, for information leading to the capture of the gunmen.

Also it was reported that gunmen stormed into a bar in the city of Torreon in northern Mexico on Sunday, killing at least 10 people. At least 41 people were injured, according to police sources.
