Mar 15, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The death toll from natural disasters have reached an abnormal high in the year 2010. The estimate is even all the more alarming as the year is barely into its third month, and already, the death toll only from natural disasters have reached an all time high, an estimate that is likely to grow higher as the year passes by. This year, the death toll, in a worldwide count, stands well above 200,000, which, given that it is only March with nine more months to go, is not only strange but positively alarming.
The radical increase from other times can obviously be attributed to the slew of natural disasters that the world has faced, starting from earthquakes to tsunamis. Moreover, some other causes seem to be at play too, mainly the rise in the population as a whole, and the urban population in particular. Another main reason is the fact that never before has so many natural disasters struck the earth in such a short span of time. Moreover, disasters of this magnitude are also hard to come by.
It has been declared unanimously by the scientists that the disaster in Haiti is of a kind that has never been seen before. Followed shortly after by the massive earthquake in Chile, the death toll rose even higher, those two calamities accounting for the maximum number of casualties. In Haiti alone, the total number of casualties reached 230,000. Of course, the fact that the two countries had a lot of economic differences also has to be taken into account, at least in regard to infrastructure and immediate medical aid.
