July 30, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Certain recent archaeological investigative projects might ultimately shed some light into the mystery surrounding dead sea scrolls which is a collection of as many as 900 biblical documents. The viewers got a chance to witness the intriguing mystery about the documents which include texts from the Hebrew Bible in the documentary “Writing the Dead Sea Scrolls” which aired on National Geographic Channel earlier this week.
The documentary which was shown on Tuesday revealed details of a new research which refutes the belief that the Dead Sea Scrolls were written by a breakaway Jewish group known as the Essenes and hints that the documents might have been written by more than one Jewish sect. Robert Cargill, an archaeologist who has been associated with the study highlighted that Jews wrote the Dead Sea Scrolls but it seems that they were not written by a single group but a number of Jewish groups. However, the recent revelations about the ancient biblical documents might not be well-received by all the experts who have been studying it for years now. Lawrence Schiffman, who is a professor of New York University where he teaches Hebrew and Judaic Studies has emphasized that chances are high that the new view would be highly disputed by the Dead Sea Scrolls scholars.
The Dead Sea Scrolls were found out about 60 years ago in around eleven caves near the ancient settlement of Khirbet Qumran. The traditional belief was that the documents were written by the Jewish sect Essenes which resided in the area during the first centuries B.C. and A.D. The mystery regarding the scrolls is likely to linger.
