Virginia, Nov 11 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The infamous Washington sniper John Allen Muhammad died silently on Tuesday night in a Virginia prison death chamber filled with lawyers, lawmen and his victims’ survivors. He died from the effects of a lethal death injection.
‘He was declared dead at 9:11 p.m. ET’, said Larry Traylor, director of communications for the Virginia Department of Corrections. “There were no complications,” Traylor told reporters outside the Greenville Correctional Center. “Mr. Mohammad was asked if he wished to make a last statement. He did not acknowledge this or make a last statement whatsoever.”
‘In fact, Mohammad, 48, said nothing from the time he entered the death chamber accompanied by guards at 8:58 p.m.’, Traylor said.
‘Justice fell short with the execution of Washington-area sniper John Allen Muhammad’, one of his victims’ survivors said after witnessing his death by lethal injection.
Steven Moore said he thought about the executed John Allen Muhammad’s accomplice, Lee Boyd Malvo, who received a life sentence for the same crime.
“Well, myself, I wish Malvo was right there beside Muhammad,” said Moore, whose sister, FBI analyst Linda Franklin, was gunned down in Virginia. “They both committed the same crimes. No, I don’t feel any closure. I mean, it’s … it … nothing changes.”
It may be recalled that, Mr. Muhammad and his 17-year-old partner in crime, Lee Boyd Malvo, terrorized the Washington region in September and October 2002 as they engaged in a series of apparently random sniper attacks in which 16 people were shot out of which around 10 died.
Jon Sheldon, Muhammad’s attorney had earlier filed an appeal for his execution to be cancelled but it had been rejected. He had argued in John’s favor that his execution was not fair, because jurors in his case were not aware that he suffered from a severe mental disease at the time of his first murder trial in 2003.
