Dalai Lama may visit Taiwan: Prez
August 27th, 2009 - 4:25 pm ICT by IBNSTaiwan, Aug 27 (IBNS) Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou Thursday said Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama will be allowed to visit the typhoon victims and pray for them.
“Ying-jeou made the announcement Thursday while visiting a school in the southern part of the island,” said a government spokesman.
An invitation to Dalai Lama is expected to be sent out soon, it was learnt.
Typhoon Morakot slammed into Taiwan on August 8 killing over 400 and rendering many homeless.
Taiwan, earlier, was apprehensive about Dalai Lama’s visit anticipating that it will anger China, which accuses him of advocating for an independent Tibet.
Taiwan and the mainland are only now smoothing their relationship after years of animosity.
