_46192424_002000759-1According to sources, the Mona Lisa has been attacked by a Russian woman who hurled a cup at the world famous portrait. The incident took place on 2nd August.

A spokesman for the Louvre Museum, Paris, which houses the artwork, said that the woman was arrested. The masterpiece created by Leonardo da Vinci did not undergo any kind of damage, as the ceramic cup smashed on the bullet proof glass surrounding the painting. The police said that the woman was taken to the psychiatric ward later.

Though The Louvre houses thousands of famous paintings, its star attraction has always been The Mona Lisa. A Louvre spokesperson said, “It looks like it was done by someone who was unhinged and wanted to draw attention to herself”, quoted by the AFP news agency.

The masterpiece has suffered earlier attacks and was successfully recovered from them. The 500 year old portrait was first stolen in 1911, but was returned to the Louvre two years later after an Italian was arrested for its theft.

A vandal tried to sabotage the great portrait by dousing it in acid and later in the same year a Bolivian tried unsuccessfully to damage it by throwing a stone at it. The painting being a cultural icon has been a victim of crimes against art on numerous occasions.

The masterpiece is protected by keeping it under strict, climate controlled conditions in its bullet-proof glass case. The humidity is maintained at 50% and the temperature is maintained between 18 and 21C. The Louvre spokes man has reported that visiting was disrupted only for the time period required to clean up the sheds of broken glass.
