Cuba declines UN mission related to torture

UNITED NATIONS (BNO NEWS) – The Cuban government rejected a United Nations (UN) visit for a fact-finding mission related to torture on the island, the United Nations News announced on Wednesday.

The UN independent expert on torture, Manfred Nowak said that he was deeply disappointed that Cuba declined to consent to any of the dates he had proposed for the mission.

“I regret that in spite of its clear invitation, the Government of Cuba has not allowed me to objectively assess the situation of torture and ill-treatment in the country by collecting first-hand evidence from all available sources,” Nowak said.

Cuba issued an invitation to the special expert in February 2009 to conduct a fact-finding mission to the country before the end of this year. Despite the several attempts, no agreement could be reached with Cuba.

Nowak’s visit would have been the first mission to Cuba by an independent expert from the UN Human Rights Council.
