jailNov.20, (THAINDIAN NEWS) A officer at the Cook Country Jail was arrested for allegedly attempting to smuggle marijuana in the jail premises. Officer Romell Wilburn was taken into custody earlier this week when the officer brought tobacco which was mixed with marijuana to the jail in a bid to supply it to some of the inmates. The officer has also been charged for his offense by one count of providing contraband in the institution which was considered a felony as per the prosecutors. At the same time, the cop was held at a bail of $25,000.

The officer could be nabbed after the cops received a tip-off based on which they acted accordingly and he was arrested after three packets of tobacco laced with marijuana were found in his custody. Reportedly, the officers entire illegal activity has been recorded in the surveillance camera that was set up. It is being presumed that Wilburn tried to bring in the drugs after the inmates might have run out of it. Andy Conklin, the spokesperson of the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office has revealed that Wilburn had made a nexus to supply marijuana to the prison inmates after procuring it from people outside.

Wilburn had been working in the Cook County Jail for the past five years and presently he was in charge of the Division 10 that keeps inmates with psychiatric problems. The officer has been asked to appear before the court next time on December 9. In case Wilburn is convicted and the charges against him are proved then the officer is likely to face a jail term of around 3-7 years.
