Conviasa passenger plane crashes in eastern Venezuela, some survive
September 13th, 2010 - 10:50 pm ICT by BNO NewsCIUDAD GUAYANA, VENEZUELA (BNO NEWS) — A passenger plane belonging to Venezuelan state-owned airline Conviasa crashed near an airport in Bolívar State on Monday morning, authorities said.
The ATR 42 aircraft, which was carrying 43 passengers and 4 crew members, went down near Manuel Carlos Piar Guayana Airport in the city of Ciudad Guayana, according to the airline. A spokeswoman said the aircraft was due to land at the airport after a flight from Santiago Mariño Caribbean International Airport in Porlamar.
Transportation Minister Francisco Garces said the aircraft crashed on the property of the state-run Sidor steel company, several kilometers (miles) from the airport, but had no other details.
Local officials said some survivors were brought to area hospitals. It was not immediately clear if there were any fatalities.
