Continental Pilot Dies In Mid Flight
June 20th, 2009 - 3:38 am ICT by GD
The pilot of a Continental Airlines passenger flight died while on board. The two co- pilots managed a safe landing for the Boeing Co. 777 plane in spite of the mishap. The 61 year old pilot was in charge of the passenger flight that had started from Brussels, Belgium and was headed towards Newark, New Jersey.
The plane had 247 passengers on board and was well on its way away from the Brussels airport when the captain of the flight 61 passed away. The situation could have gone out of hand, if not for the deftness of the two back up pilots, who took charge of the whole situation and brought the plane to a safe landing.
The flight made a safe landing in the Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey at 11:49 a.m EST after having departed from the Brussels airport at 9:45 a.m. The name of the pilot has not been declared by the Continental Airlines Inc. in their statement till now. It is reported that the passengers in the flight did not know or get any wind of the death until the plane made its landing a few hours later. One of the passengers, it seems, found out about the incident after receiving a call.
The pilot, it is reported, had worked with Continental Airlines for a long period of time, almost 32 years. The cause of the death is reported to be natural. This sort of an incident is said to have occurred 5 other times in the recent 15 years. The chances for a pilot to die while on flight is about 4 per 100 million flights.
