SOFIA, BULGARIA (BNO NEWS) — Bulgarian construction companies and their workers started on Monday a four-day protest near a military base used by the U.S. Army seeking for unpaid money, local media reported.

Representatives of 21 construction companies from southeast Bulgaria have been protesting as they claim money owed to them for work their performed as subcontractors on the Novo Selo training ground, the Novonite news agency reported.

The protesters blocked a local road leading to the military training ground which is used jointly by the Bulgarian and US armed forces.

The US Army Corps of Engineers has advised the protestors to turn to the Bulgarian court for the settlement of many disputes they might have with the contractor.

“We will work with applicable Bulgarian authorities to the fullest extent of the law to ensure the concerns of subcontractors are properly addressed,” The US Army Corps of Engineers said in an statement.

The U.S. Military said they paid EUR 3.73 million to a previous subcontractor who is the leading nonpayment claimant.
