Apr 8 (THAINDIAN NEWS) In March, Angie Benhaffaf shared her fears about handing her sons, Hassan and Hussein over to doctors too undergo surgery. The twin brothers were born at University College Hospital, London in December, conjoined at the chest. Already a mother of two daughters, (Malika, age 6 and Iman, age four)Angie and her husband (Azzedine Benhaffaf) remained optimistic about the out come of the surgery planned to separate their two boys.

“I think we’ll be very sad when we see them apart because from the very first scan, the boys have been in the beautiful shape of a heart, and if you look at them today, that is their shape. It’s very hard to hand over two healthy boys and to know that you have to do it, but I do have 100% faith in the team.”Angie explained. Conjoined twins are born about once in every 50,000 twin births in developed countries.

Doctors at London’s Great Ormond Street Hospital have successfully separated the boys on Wednesday. It took about 20 members of hospital staff, doctors and nurses to pull off the fourteen hour surgical procedure. The doctors report that the babies are both sedated in intensive care, but are stable. The parents seem to be feeling much better as well. In a statement released on Thursday they said, “Words cannot express the relief and love we feel for our two boys.”
