Los Angeles, Oct 10 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The United States marks a very important day on the second Monday of October each year. The day is observed as a federal holiday and used to honor arguably the most important person in the formation of the country.

Christopher Columbus sailed to the New World on the 12th of October 1492 and that was the single act that later led to the formation of the United States and the Americas. As a result of the importance attached to the day, several countries in North, South and Central America observe the day as a holiday.

To mark the day, several federal agencies will be closed throughout the day. Other services like Postal and transportation will be disrupted as well. All Post Offices in the United States except Express Mail will be closed in observance of the day. In the state and municipal levels, several offices will not be opened on the day.

Outside of the United States, other countries also observe the Columbus Day. Uruguay calls it the Día de las Américas which translates to “Day of the Americas” in English. Other Latin countries however call it the “Discovery Day” to mark the discovery of the continent about five hundred years ago.
