Washington, May 24 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Former US Secretary of State Colin Powell has showed his support for gay marriage. He argues that states should not have the ultimate decision regarding same-sex marriage.

The retired four-star general has stated his views on the subject during a CNN interview with Wolf Blitzer. He stated that he believes that is no reason why gay and lesbian couples should not be allowed to live together and get married under the protection of national and state law.

Powell, who served in George W. Bush administration, supported the view of President Barack Obama who, earlier this month, also showed his support for gay marriage. Speaking in deeply personal terms, the president encouraged support to his argument, stating that his young daughters, Malia and Sasha, have friends whose parents are gay or lesbian couples.

Powell was chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff when the DADT (“Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”) policy that was enacted within the US army in 1993.

He claims that the DADT was a legislation imposed by the congress which improved the situation of the military at the time. Powell claims that 17 years after the enactment of DADT legislation, things have changed and is time for the US to move on in terms of homosexual and lesbian rights.
