RONKONKOMA, New York (BNO NEWS) — Frightening moments on board a passenger plane from Bradley International Airport in Connecticut to Orlando International Airport in Florida on Sunday morning when it was suddenly diverted to an airport in New York after reports of smoke or a fire on board.

The Southwest Airlines plane, flight 693, landed safely at Long Island Macarthur Airport in New York at 7.36 a.m. EDT, surrounded by emergency services. All 136 people on board were safely evacuated.

According to FAA spokesman Jim Peters, a flight attendant smelled smoke or something burning and informed the pilot who requested the emergency landing. A number of passengers in the front of the plane were told to put on the oxygen masks.

Everything turned out fine when the plane made a safe landing. An inspector for the FAA found no internal or external damage and there was no sign of an electrical problem. Authorities believe the smell was caused by coffee grinds.

The plane made another attempt about two hours later, and departed at 9.43 a.m. EDT. The flight is now scheduled to arrive in Orlando at 12.14 p.m. EDT.
