July 29th, 2010 - 8:49 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattMount Rainier, July 29 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A 52 year old mountain climber, Lee F. Adams died instantly when he fell from Mount Rainier on Tuesday. He was a member of the Washington Alpine Club and he had also taught at the club for several years.
The veteran climber was part of a group of four who were descending the mountain on Tuesday. According to the witness account, another climber lost his balance and fell causing the other climbers to lose their balance in the process. “Once you start sliding down slope it can be very difficult to stop that fall and often teams that do fall end up sliding pretty far and going into a crevasse and that’s what eventually stops them and that’s what happened in this case,” according to the Park spokeswoman - Lee Taylor.
All the four men then fell awkwardly for 100 feet. Adams died on impact while another climber sustained various injuries, but the other two climbers escaped serious injuries. Adam fell into a crevasse and rescuers using helicopters retrieved his body.
Adams who was an expert in molecular biology was very instrumental to the researches of the Institute for Systems Biology, where he worked as a research scientist.
His death brought a great shock to his colleagues at the institute. The rate of climbers’ death at the mountain this summer is high. Already, three climbers have died at the park.
