A riot that began in Chino prison (California Institution for Men) on August 9th night at 8:20pm reportedly which is ambiguously being said to be caused by a difference between the Hispanics and the Afro-American in the prison.

The Reception Center West facility was where a fight resulted in inmates setting the unit on fire. The building had 7 units with 200 people in each unit. The riot went so wild that several inmates had to be taken to hospital, sources said. Chino Valley firefighters reached the scene to help out before the other units were set alight. Another small unit other than the one where fire initially started had also been set on fire, sources said.

Other violent inmates were randomly controlled at the scene by an immediate lock down, said prison official Lt.Mark.Hargrove. He said a collective effort was being put by prison officials to mitigate the situation which went out of hand. The inmates were being re-located to other prisons to tackle the situation. The Ontario Police and San Bernardino County officials also reached the scene to assist.

The California Institution for Men is the fourth state prison built in the city and spreads over 2500 acres. It has 3 Reception Centers for convenient classification of incoming inmates and in the fiscal year 2007 had an annual budget of $232.2 million. The institution opened in 1941 and “was the first major minimum security institution built and operated in the U.S”. It even boasted an “acute-care hospital” but the license to such privilege was seized in July 2007.
