Chino, California man arrested for cyber-extortion of Mew York-based insurance company

MANHATTAN, NEW YORK (BNO NEWS) – A man of Chino, California was arrested on charges of attempting to extort approximately $200,000 from a New York-based life insurance company, prosecutors announced on Monday.

Anthony Digati, 52, was arrested after he threatened to make false public statements and transmit computer spam in an effort to damage reputation of the company and cost it millions of dollars in revenue.

Digati allegedly sent, to more than a dozen employees and one board member, an email which contained a website address that leaded the viewer to a website created by the defendant. In the website, Digati listed some demands he needed to be fulfilled in exchange for stopping a spam campaign.

The defendant asked for $198,303, noting that this amount wasn’t negotiable. He also said that 6 million people would be contacted in a spam campaign on March 8.

“I am going to drag your company name and reputation, through the muddiest waters imaginable. This will cost you millions in lost revenues, trust and credibility not to mention the advertising you will be buying to counter mine”, the defendant wrote I his website.

If found guilty, Digati faces a maximum sentence of two years in prison and a maximum fine of $250,000 or twice the loss or gain derived from the offense.
