May 20, (THAINDIAN NEWS) A 53 year old college professor and 21 others have been put on trial by the district court in the southeastern town of Nanjing for ‘group licentiousness’. Ma Yaohai, the professor who founded the swingers’ club was the only one to receive a prison sentence. The other members of the club who pleaded ‘not guilty’ were all kept under probation. The 1997 law with which these members of the swingers club were convicted has aroused immense curiosity among common people for its spicy content.
Ma Yaohai said to the media that he decided to form the club after his two failed marriages. He invited consenting adults to a non private place and organized orgies. These parties were sometimes attended by dozens of men and women. Ma Yaohai’s attorney Yao Yong’an said in a statement that his client will appeal the verdict. Their argument is that a person is free to do anything with their bodies and these activities were done in completely private places with consenting adults. Ma Yaohai compared marriage to water and these swinger parties to wine, which one can drink only if one likes it. The group had around 35 sessions between 2007-2009 and Ma Yaohai himself participated in 18 of them.
The trial has become a topic of great debate in China where there is a gradual awakening of sexual freedom. For a country that had deep rooted traditional philosophies about sexuality, such a news is somewhat ground shaking. The supporters of Ma Yaohai feel that the Chinese government should stay out of people’s bedrooms. White collar employees, taxi drivers and salesclerks were among the men and women who were arrested.
