Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo awarded the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize
October 8th, 2010 - 4:10 pm ICT by BNO NewsSTOCKHOLM (BNO NEWS) — Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo was awarded the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday morning, the first Chinese citizen to win the honorable prize.
The Norwegian Nobel Institute in Oslo said Xiaobo’s “long and non-violent struggle for fundamental human rights in China” had earned him the prize.
This year, the Committee had a record number of 337 nominations to choose from. Among them were 38 organizations on a list that was top secret until the announcement was made.
Last year, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to U.S. President Barack Obama “for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.” That announcement led to criticism.
