Jan 12 (THAINDIAN NEWS) By 2020, it is expected that in China 24 million eligible bachelors will be in a crisis of finding suitable brides for themselves. Since the imposition of one-child plan in China, people are aborting female fetus. Due to abortions, there is a steady rise in male population since 1980, which has caused gender imbalance. According to China Daily, ever since China’s Communist Party imposed the one-child policy thirty years back, there is a steady decline of female population. Almost 400 million births are prevented in this process. In the urban areas, it is a strict rule that parents should not have more than one child. In the rural areas in some circumstances, the rules are a little lenient- where parents can have two children.
Due to this imbalance, lots of intergenerational marriages will take place in a few years. Guys will have to get married to women much older to them. According to reports, “Such serious gender disproportion poses a major threat to the healthy, harmonious and sustainable growth of the nation’s population and would trigger such crimes and social problems as mercenary marriage, abduction of women and prostitution”. Chinese men will probably have to migrate to another country for finding a bride for themselves or import brides from different regions. This may cause social disturbance and lots of crimes.
Some describes the problem as “Bachelors bomb”, which implies that the older a guy gets, the more difficult it is for him to get married. According to demographers, the shortage of female population will lead to an increasing number of prostitution, adultery, forced marriages and migration in search of women. It is time for action and prevention of this imbalance.
