Charla Nash chimp attack May 7 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Charla Nash, the woman who was mauled horrible by her friend’s pet chimpanzee in February of 2009,in Stamford Connecticut, has been discharged from the Cleveland Ohio clinic where she has been ever since the attack. She will now be staying in an assisted living facility near Boston, Massachusetts.

An attorney for the victim’s family told The Associated Press on Friday that she had been discharged from the clinic on Thursday, and was then flown on a private plane to the Boston area. She had been treated by multiple teams of doctors over the past year and a half. At the time she first arrived in the Cleveland clinic following the attack, she had been listed in critical but stable condition, with severe damage to her hands, face, scalp and hands. She lost her hands, her face was so badly disfigured that she wore a veil around the hospital, and later lost her eyes to an infection, which means she will no longer be able to see.

A spokesman for the Cleveland Clinic stated that Nash was discharged after making significant progress. According to her attorney, Bill Monaco, Nash will be learning the skills she needs to be able to live on her own, and is hoping to have more reconstructive surgery.

The Stamford Connecticut attack on Nash was so horrific that the police officer who responded to the 911 call did not even recognize her as human when he first arrived on the scene. The chimp turned on him, opened the police car door, and got face to face with the officer, Frank Chiafari. He shot the chimp at point blank range several times before it ran off. Officer Chiafari suffered post traumatic stress disorder following the incident, and was not able to work. Despite the fact that he was a 25 year veteran on the force, the City of Stamford denied his worker’s compensation claim. A new bill passed in Connecticut passed last month which will make police men in situations like this one to claim their benefits. It was passed 29-4, and moves on to the House for debate. The chimp died later of gunshot wounds.
