chile2Santiago, Chile, Mar 12, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The horror story of Chile’s earthquake does not seem to be over yet. The country was hit by yet another aftershock of considerable magnitude on Mar 11, 2010, Thursday. In fact, the reported earthquake of strong magnitude was only one of the series that shook the country less than a month after the horrific quake that hit the country, and forms part of the approximate 150-odd tremors that has shaken the ground since then. In the latest series of quakes, one was strong enough to instigate the issuing of a tsunami warning reminding the residents of the 8.8 magnitude earthquake that had started it all.

According to the United States Geological Survey, among the latest series of tremors in Chile, one measured a whopping 6.9 in the Richter Scale. However, reports vary slightly, with some sources claiming that it measured 7.2 on the seismograph, and that it had been the first of the four earthquakes that struck in quick succession. The strongest earthquake that struck lasted for about 45 seconds. It hit the town of Libertador O’Higgins in central Chile. The epicenter of the tremor had been in the city of Rancagua, and the earthquake originated at a depth of approximately 11 kilometers.

Meanwhile, certain reports have claimed that the intense aftershock resulted in further damage in few parts of the disaster hit nation. Although a tsunami warning was issued, none struck the already devastated country. The tsunami warning was lifted about two hours after it had been issued. However, this is being considered to be the biggest of the aftershocks to have hit the country since the major earthquake.
