chile1Concepcion, Chile, Mar 4, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The country of Chile has been experiencing repeated aftershocks following the massive earthquake that hit the country on Saturday. The number of the aftershocks, as per reports, stand at 150 so far. However, the biggest aftershock so far occurred on Wednesday. The aftershock occurred at around 10:59 in the night. According to the officials of the Geological Survey of the United States, two aftershocks had been reported, one after the other, with not much interval between them. However, the second one was big enough to be felt. Thankfully, however, the shock did not result in a tsunami, like the major quake on Saturday had.

The aftershock took place in the same area that had been hit with the earthquake, the central Chilean city of Concepcion. According to the officials of the United States Geological Survey, the shock had originated some 21.4 miles, shallow in comparison to the other major quake. The epicenter of the tremors lay in the ocean. The magnitude is a matter of some dispute, with some sources reporting that it measured 5.9 in the Richter Scale, while still others reported it measuring 6.1.

Although no tsunami was predicted, an alert was on nevertheless, but it was lifted in about half an hour, or less. Needless to say, the aftershock led to the residents of the city, still traumatized about the earthquake, fleeing to higher ground for fear of another tsunami. However, the fire officials assured the panicking city through announcements made through loudspeakers that no tsunami would possibly arise. Although the quake had been pretty strong, it had not added to the damage or loss of life. The current death toll in Chile stands at 802.
