Charla Nash face transplant New York, Aug 12 (THAINDIAN NEWS) For the first time since her breakthrough face transplant, the woman who had her face torn by a friend’s chimpanzee has shown her new face to the world. Charla Nash was featured on Today show on Friday where she spoke for the first time about her new face.

Nash was too weak to appear in person in the studio. Instead her daughter and brother went to the studio. In the pre-recorded interview, Nash said that, “I’m beginning to feel my jaw and chin. And I can move my mouth and smile. I still feel weak. But little by little I’m getting stronger.”

Nash was given another face in May when a group of surgeons, nurses and anesthetists totaling about 30 carried out a 20-hour procedure on her. The procedure has left Nash with the ability to smell, move her facial muscles and smile again for the first time since the attack happened.

Another transplant on her hands failed because her body rejected the donated organ. The complications from that procedure left her with pneumonia and kidney failure.

Nash was left blind with deformed face after her friend’s chimpanzee attacked her. The animal ripped off her eyelids, hands, nose, lips and huge chunk of her face.
