Reno, Apr 1 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The Casino at the ex-Rat Pack hangout is about to close down. It was the favorite hangout of stars such as Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. Their patronage of the casino had made the Cal Neva Lodge one of the preferred hangouts of Nevada in the early 1960’s.

However now the casino is all set to close down. On Wednesday the roulette will spin to a complete stop, and the blackjack games will be stopped forever. The present owner is planning to revamp the place and open the casino with an outside contractor by the end of 2010. However old fans of the casino say that with an outside contractor the place would never be the same again. On top of that Las Vegas would also provide good competition to the casino. So the analysts think that recession and the competition of Las Vegas would take its toll on the casino.

“The realities are when you have that kind of decline the weakest operators typically get pushed out. The older, tired casinos — and the Cal Neva is a great example — don’t have much to offer for gaming,” according to William Eadington, who is an economics professor and director of the Institute for the Study of Gambling and Commercial Gaming at the University of Nevada, Reno.
