Caroline Wimmer Parents Lawsuit: Facebook Faces Legal Action
July 31st, 2009 - 12:58 am ICT by GD
The parents of Caroline Wimmer, the 26 year-old homicide victim who was beaten and strangled to death with a blow-dryer cord in her Greenleaf Avenue apartment some months ago, are reportedly suing Facebook and a horde of other defendants including the City of New York for their collective roles in contributing to the intensification of the tragedy.
Ostensibly out to chastise the social networking site for its decidedly insensitive role in the sequence of events, by allowing a ghoulish photograph of their daughter’s dead body to be posted on it, the bereaved couple apparently, claim to be doing this not for the pecuniary gain, but with the intention of making Facebook accountable for its internet etiquette and decency, or in this case, the alleged lack of it.
The photo was snapped by Mark Musarella, a 46 year-old retired NYPD operative, who at the time worked as an Emergency Medical Technician for the Richmond University Medical Center. Summoned on a professional call, he took the liberty of not just taking the shots on his cellphone, but also posting the photo on his Facebook profile.
While Musarella himself lost his job to the incident, and was charged with official misconduct, it is Facebook that is being brought to the books, this time round, with the attorney for the Wimmers, threatening to shut it down completely unless the site manages to reform itself to be a “lawful corporate citizen”. He further emphasized, with reference to the lawsuit, that this time round, Facebook had managed to land itself with a “real problem” on its hands.
