Jurors re-thought it over and returned a decision of life without parole for the 28-year-old former Jackson schoolteacher and mother of a 5-year-old son Carla Hughes. On Tuesday, they convicted her of two counts of capital murder in the slaying of Avis Banks and her unborn child in November 2006.
People have said she is a convicted murderer, he said. “That’s not the Carla I perceive,” Carl Hughes told the jury. “I beg you, I beg you to spare my daughter. I plead with you to spare my daughter.”
Lynda Hughes said her daughter was “always an achiever.”
“I’ve never known Carla to ever fight back or hit someone, even when she was growing up,” Lynda Hughes testified.
It may be recalled that, Carla Hughes was on trial for the murder of Avis Banks, who was five months pregnant at the time of her death. Hughes is believed to have suddenly turned up at Banks’s Ridgeland home on November 29, 2006 and shot her in the head, buttock and legs and stabbed her in the head and neck.
She was involved in a “sexual adventure” with Banks’ fiancé Pittman and wanted to marry him and be with him forever. Both Pittman and Hughes taught in the same school at Jacksonville. Pittman admits to having sex with Carla in the residence he shared with Avis.
