June 1st, 2010 - 6:25 am ICT by BNO News ( Leave a comment )MONTREAL, CANADA (BNO NEWS) — Canadian officials on Monday identified the man on a no-fly list who prompted U.S. officials to divert an Aeromexico flight from Paris to Montreal on Sunday.
The Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Board said the passenger’s name is Abdirahman Ali Gaal.
Jacqueline Roby, a Canada Border Services Agency spokeswoman confirmed that Ali Gaal was on a U.S. no-fly list and that was known to Canadian authorities. “He was deemed inadmissable before because he didn’t comply to the Immigration Act,” said Roby, the Canadian Press reported.
Aeromexico flight 006, operated by a Boeing 767-300, was diverted and landed at Montreal’s Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport at 1:25 p.m. EDT after being denied access to U.S. airspace.
Aeromexico told BNO News that the passenger was on a U.S. security list as an unwanted person.
Lauren Gaches, a spokeswoman for the TSA said “officers removed the individual from the flight and arrested him on an outstanding warrant.”
Gaches did not say why the person was being sought, but said the United States has the ability to refuse entry to any flight. “The United States’ ability to refuse entry into its territory of any flight it deems to present a threat to its security is recognized by numerous countries and is consistent with international agreements,” she said.
A witness on board the plane, Mexican senator Francisco Javier Castellon, said Ali Gaal was an Arab-looking man and was in seat 23H. Castellon said Ali Gaal’s final destination was the city of Tijuana, bordering with San Diego, California.
The plane, which departed Paris Charles De Gaulle Airport, was carrying 150 passengers.
