Camel No. 9 teen
March 16th, 2010 - 8:02 pm ICT by Pen Men At Work ( 2 comments )Mar 16 (Pen Men at Work): The recent ad for the camel no 9 cigarette seems to have caught the fancy of teen age girls. The print which came in the magazines like Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Glamour etc have been a huge hit amongst the girls aged 12 to 16 says a study of 1,036 adolescents published online Monday in Pediatrics.
David Howard, spokesperson for R. J. Reynolds, which makes Camel, tried to make its stand clear saying that companies aim was never to target kids but their recent ads were made for adults who read these magazines. He claims that teen smoking has declined since these ads were introduced in the magazines.
But it seems that these ads have clearly been noticed by teenagers as in 2008, within a year of ad’s debut, 22% of girls listed camel as their favourite brand. This was a two fold increase since past surveys. Though there have been no major changes in preference of boys.
John Pierce of the Moores Cancer Center at the University of California- San Diego show that kids are taking an interest in cigarette and non smoking teens who can name a favorite ad are 50% more likely to begin smoking than other kids.
However , R.J. Reynolds pulled out ads from magazines in 2008 after reports of increase in teen smoking were exposed.

Perhaps studies should also show that Marlboro is a brand of cigarettes geared more towards males. Marlboro reds are nicknamed “Cowboy Killers” and almost every ad features a male (often in western guise) smoking or an outdoors scenery labeled “marlboro country”. Camel on the otherhand has been using females in their advertisements for years, often portrayed smoking the product. So why the outrage now? Also did studies show that this may also be geared towards flavor preferences? I began smoking at the age of 16. My first cigarette was a full flavor marlboro (a red). However I was introduced to my first menthol cigarette 2 years later (a camel), and have been smoking them ever since. Camel offers a much wider variety of menthol cigarettes. Why not do a study showing female preference to menthol over full flavor? And also, do a study on marlboro, and see if it’s not a fact that most of the females using their product will pick a menthol cigarette (marlboro smooth 5:1) to a full flavored. How many of these females were smoking Camel no. 9 full flavored? My guess is most are smoking the menthols.

Ban all cigarettes sales. If you want to smoke them grow your own, the same with pot.
