Chicago, Dec 4, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The notorious and infamous Cabrini-Green Housing in downtown Chicago, will finally be demolished in January, to bring and end to the era of failure in public housing in the nation. For several decades, the Cabrini-Green has been nurturing of all types of heinous crimes like murders, rape and robbery, apart from being the last dreadful resort for the poorest people in the city. However, the authorities have now decided to bring an end to the 70-acre development.
What would now substitute the Cabrini-Green Housing are mixed-income townhouses, shops and other redevelopment, that would be void of the numerous crimes that the location has witnessed for decades. Most of the people who have been residing in this dingy dark adobe have been provided with an alternative accommodation. The few remaining families at Cabrini’s last high-rise have to vacate their apartments by December 10. The 134-unit building is set to be demolished in January. The housing agency said on Tuesday that they are working on the remaining families, so that they can easily vacate their apartments after they find an alternative accommodation. The residents of 1230 N. Burling St. have some more time in hand, which has been extended to January 4. However, the Chicago Housing Authority have warned that if most of the residents move out early, then they would start with its demolition process as soon as possible.
Recently, a resident had sent out a news release that said that the boarders would like to spend their holidays in their community, according to the terms and condition of the CHA. However, it seems very unlikely as with a situation like this, they would be able to make full use of the holiday.
