untitled37San Fracisco, Oct. 28 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The San Francisco-Oakland bridge was closed down on Tuesday because of a cable snap. The cable snap took place on the span’s upper deck during the evening, at around 5.30 p.m. The snap happened near “S-Curve”, a portion of the bridge which had been very newly installed. According to the California Highway Patrol Officer, Peter Van Eckhardt, the cable that broke down, along with two metal rods, fell on the westbound lane of the bridge. The incident resulted in the driver of a Ryder vehicle to be shaken up and maybe injured. His car’s windshield was also smashed up. There are reports of three vehicle accidents being caused by the debris. However, reports of any injuries have not been made. Also, there was a commuter jam because of the snap. The main cause of the cable-snap has been blamed on heavy winds.

Both sides of the bridge had been closed down. Eckhardt said, the bridge would reportedly be closed for at least 24 hours to give time to the crew for repairs. However, sources report that the close-down could also be indefinite. Traffic was backed up into Oakland even before the closure actually took place. Bay Area Rapid Transit District’s spokesperson said that, extra trains would be brought in.

S-Curve had been installed, on this year’s Labor day weekend. S-Curve is a double-deck section which replaced, a 3,300-ton, eastern span section. The portion that caused the current mishap was reportedly inspected several times in the past few days. The bridge, accommodates around 260,000 vehicles in a single day, commuting between San Francisco and other East-cities.
