UTRECHT, THE NETHERLANDS (BNO NEWS) — A Dutch man was injured when he tried to board a bus in the city of Utrecht on Wednesday, but the bus driver ignored him and dragged him away with his vehicle.

The bizarre accident happened around 08.45 a.m. local time on Wednesday, police said Thursday. The victim, who lives in the city of Zeist, was waiting for the bus together with his girlfriend.

When the bus arrived, police say, the couple tried to board the bus together with a small group of other people. After some of the people entered the bus, the bus driver closed the doors. The victim knocked on the door of the bus to alert the driver, who did not respond.

As the bus began to drive away, the victim went to the front of the bus in another attempt to alert the driver. “The [bus] driver continued after which [the man] came in front of the bus and was dragged away for some 20 meters,” police said. The man grabbed a windshield wiper to prevent falling to the ground, but fell when the bus driver took a turn.

The man suffered injuries to his leg and shoulder, and police are investigating the accident.

Witnesses are asked to come forward.
