It must be heart rendering to lose loved ones and to add to their miseries occur when their bodies are dug out from the cemetery. This is exactly what happened in the Burr Oak Cemetery. It has been reported by the investigators that around 100 bodies have been dug out from the Burr Oak Cemetery on Wednesday as the plots for the burial have been resold.
The Burr Oak cemetery is located in Alsip, Illinois which is a suburb near Chicago. The Cemetery caught media attention because this is no ordinary burial ground. There is a lot of notable persons who have been buried like Dinah Washington, the jazz legend, bluesmen Wilie Dixon, Otis Spann, Inman Jackson, The Harlem Globetrotter besides several negro league baseball players. Emmett Will, of the the 1955 murder case and his mother Mamie Till Mobley have also been buried here.
Authorities have confirmed that the whole incident has been a scheme to sell the plots again to customers. The bodies have been reportedly dug and dumped in mass graves at the back of the cemetery. The investigators have been trying to know how many plots have been resold yet and though no charges have been issued, Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart added that five employees of the cemetery is under interrogation.
Dart, who thinks that the scheme has been continuing for four years was quoted saying, “All of us who were working on this for the last week were pretty distraught. You start with the premise of your own loved ones and how they are cared for after they are buried, but there is a also a true significance to this particular cemetery.”
President of Leak and Sons Funeral Home, Spencer Leak Sr said that it has been the only cemetery where the African Americans have buried for several years. Reports for ill maintenance have been reported earlier.

as disrespectful as i think this is to the deceased- how could this have been going on for four years and nobody know about it? and then all of a sudden every person that is somehow related to someone that was buried there is crying, falling down with sorrow, only when on t.v. they care oh so much now, but didn’t care in the last four years??? typical… i don’t mean to sound cruel, but the lightbulb has gone off in their heads that they will be able to get money out of this one way or another. if they really cared about their loved ones, they would have known that they were dug up some time ago. granted- this doesn’t apply to all, i.e. family that has moved away. but locals that still reside in the chicagoland area- where were you at the past four years this was going on and why didn’t you notice this then? obviously the headstone was taken and replaced with the newly deceased headstone correct? you didn’t notice? the human race never ceases to amaze me. what happened is unforgivable and they should be punished, but don’t going getting all teary eyed now when this has been going on for four years and the only reason you know is because you heard it on the news and rushed out to see and put on the act. shame on you for not visiting your “loved one” for the last four years. now you can kick yourself in the ass for not being able to visit them ever again except in your memories. this is partly your fault as well- if you would have at least visited one single time in the last four years you would have known something was happening. however- i have the feeling that once the money is dished out, everyone will go back to their self-centered lives and this will all be forgotten with the exception of a few. and this is just as pathetic as digging up the graves to begin with.
