Buffalo, NY woman sentenced for student loan fraud case

BUFFALO, NEW YORK (BNO NEWS) – A woman of Buffalo, New York was sentenced to three years in federal prison for student loan fraud and making false claims for income tax refunds, prosecutors announced on Thursday.

Raymonda Shallowhorn, 36, engaged in a fraudulent tax return and student loan application from 2002 to 2008. Agents from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Criminal Investigation Division discovered the fraud scheme and also that Shallowhorn had been previously convicted for a similar conduct.

Ms. Shallowhorn admitted to filing, under different names, more than 17 federal fraudulent income tax returns claiming $86,000. She also received twenty-five checks for a total of $44,000 in student loan proceeds.

In both fraudulent schemes, Shallowhorn used false information and documents in order to obtain the loans and checks.

The defendant was ordered to pay in restitution the amount of $141,129.
